ARPG Helps Individuals Overcome Gambling Addiction Disorders

Apr 21, 2025

The Arkansas Problem Gambling Council (ARPG), a nonprofit established in 2021, offers services and programs to help individuals address gambling issues. The organization also extends its support to those impacted by gambling problems, including families, employers, students, and treatment professionals, fostering a community-wide approach to recovery.

ARPG’s programs aim to equip people with resources to navigate treatment and recovery. This includes education, advocacy, prevention strategies, research-backed information, and professional support.

Under the leadership of Vena M. Schexnayder and Silakhone Douangkesone, ARPG has developed a three-stage professional training program for treatment providers. The first stage offers 12 Continuing Education (CE) hours focused on “Arkansas Gambling and Problem Gambling,” followed by a second 12-hour module on “Gambling Treatment Approach/Application.” The third stage provides 4 to 6 hours of advanced, expert-led training on specialized topics.

ARPG also raises public awareness through events. On March 18, 2023, it co-hosted the March Madness for Mental Health Advocates Dinner & Silent Auction at Trapnall Hall. Tied to the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament, the event aimed to spotlight problem gambling during a period when tens of millions of adults wagered on basketball games.

By providing resources for counselors and advocating for accessible mental health services, ARPG works to ensure that Arkansas residents struggling with gambling and co-occurring addiction disorders receive the support they need.
